Alaska Bike Month 2026

WHEREAS, Alaska offers breathtaking landscapes for biking and recreation across a wide range of scenic roads and trails, and bike-friendly communities offer abundant opportunities for residents and visitors to explore the State on two wheels, from urban paths in cities to rugged backcountry trails and majestic coastal routes; and

WHEREAS, May is National Bike Month, established in 1956 and sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, and is celebrated in communities across the United States to encourage more people to experience the joy and benefits of bicycling; and

WHEREAS, regular exercise promotes better health and is associated with a reduced risk of numerous chronic diseases and conditions; and

WHEREAS, biking is an opportunity to experience the outdoors, whether you bike to commute, to save money or time, to preserve your health, to reduce energy consumption, or simply to explore your community; and

WHEREAS, when cycling infrastructure connects people to the places they regularly visit, higher levels of physical activity occur for transportation, recreation, and all other purposes; and

WHEREAS, to ensure personal bike safety, wear a helmet to protect your head in the event of a crash; and when no dedicated bike lane is present, remember to share the road with other users.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim May 2026 as:

Alaska Bike Month

in Alaska and encourage all Alaskans to commit to making our roads safer for bicyclists and pedestrians.
